Apple Crisp
Is there anything easier than Apple Crisp? This recipe works with any kind of apple but I prefer not to use Granny Smiths as they are a bit too sour for my taste but feel free to experiment. This can also work with pears.
Ingredients
5-6 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup white sugar, divided
2 tablespoons brown sugar
A pinch of salt
3/4 cup steel cut oats or rolled oats
1/2 cup raw or roasted almonds (best to avoid salted nuts but if it’s all you’ve got, then don’t add any additional salt) or pecans
6 tablespoons cold butter
Optional add ins to the apples: a 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger or a pinch of nutmeg, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 teaspoon almond extract or 1/4 cup fresh cranberries
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
In a large bowl, toss apples with 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, and half of the white sugar. Dump into a pie plate sprayed with baking spray.
In a food processor, pulse the butter, nuts, the oats and the rest of the sugars until crumbly. Top the apples completely with the crumb mixture and bake uncovered for 35 mins or until bubbly. Do not let the top burn. Allow the Crisp to cool and then spoon into serving bowls with a side of ice cream.
